HAITI : EMERGENCY RELIEF AFTER DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKE 0n 29 January 2010, Malteser International took over the health post in Léogâne from their Argentinian partners, having worked together for about one week. Léogâne is a town with about 300,000 inhabitants, around 30 kilometres to the west of Port-au-Prince and close to the earthquake's epicentre.
The damage rates in Léogâne following the earthquake were up to 90 %. The 12- strong team, consisting of medical doctors, nurses, a midwife and a paramedic are mostly volunteers sent by the Cuban and German association of the Order of Malta and provide basic medical assistance in the camp and the surrounding areas.
Whereas the need for surgical interventions is decreasing, there is still an urgent need for post-operative care and epidemiological surveillance. More and more primary health care and preventative health care and less emergency health care are needed.
